How are food costs working out for you? Do you need to cut back? Then do something different! Why not try making your favorite snacks yourself?
Let’s start with snacks. Snacks are very expensive and it’s a cost we can do without but who wants to?
Cookies
Yesterday, my son made chocolate chip cookies and they were delicious. We made eight and put the rest in the freezer for another time. That’s the great thing about cookie dough. You eat a little bit to satisfy your chocolate or sweet craving without having 32 cookies that need to be eaten now. Of course, there is a significant lack of additives in homemade cookies.
Popcorn
In the evenings, we like to have a little popcorn. I was raised back in the day where my daddy made popcorn on the stove. Microwave popcorn may be effortless but it is very expensive compared to home popped corn. Not to mention that I am convinced the microwave does bad things to our food. To make popcorn, set the burner heat to medium-high. Pour a little oil or bacon grease into the bottom of the pan. Use just enough to cover the bottom. Then, pour enough popcorn to make a single layer across the bottom. Once it starts popping you slide the pot back and forth over the burner. This lifts the popped corn and the unpopped kernels settle to the bottom towards the heat. In a few minutes, it’s ready. Melt some butter in the bottom of the pan. It should not need to be put back on the stove to melt it. Immediately pour the melted butter on top of the popcorn. Use a spatula to remove all buttery deliciousness from the pot. If not butter, coconut oil is healthy and delicious and then there is always bacon grease!
Crackers
Crackers can be made at home too. Who can spend $5 on a box of crackers anymore? Find a good recipe and make sure to roll them out as thin as possible (with a rolling pin.) If you like your crackers, this will be a great investment.
Potato Chips
For potato chips, you need a mandolin which cuts very thinly. I think an air fryer works best but you could also deep fry them in oil.
Ice Cream
Invest in your future snacking life. What snacks can you not live without? Ice cream? Find a local farm with milk and get yourself an ice cream maker.
Times are going to get tougher…invest in yourself and your comfort.
